I was on a rather packed train one morning, so much so in fact, that the only continuous body parts I could find to draw were these legs. As I’ve mentioned many times before, sketching in public never guarantees you the perfect subject, so sometimes you just have to work with what you have and make the most of it.

  1. So, wouldn’t an imperfect subject be a great subject for an artist? I offer this naff observation as some body who knows nothing about art but knows what she likes. 🙂

    1. Actually, you’re spot-on; there are always plenty of safe, easy to draw subjects on the train, but after a while, it all becomes routine and I can get bored easily, resulting in some pretty lazy and uninspired drawings. It’s those imperfect subjects – the ones partially hidden from view, seated or standing in a challenging pose, or simply presenting with a challenging head of hair or ensemble of clothing – that provides fresh opportunities to draw something new, and in the process, grow as a sketch artist.
